Community is important to me.

I love the work I do, and I try not to forget I am part of a larger community that need my love and support. Here are a few ways I do that as a florist and small business.

Donating Flowers!

This one is pretty easy. I donate flowers to my church - St Joseph’s on Tulane - several times through out the year. I do an annual fundraiser for the Harry Tompson Center for the Homeless, and for Planned Parenthood.

Think Green.

Being a florist creates a lot of waste! We reuse our cardboard containers and then recycle them. We compost our flower scraps in big bins on our parking lot and have generated so much compost that this April we will be having our first Arbor Day Compost and Sapling give away. Our flowers are responsibly sourced, and we use local flowers when they are available to us. We strive to be foam free and are actively looking for practices that reduce our floral foam use.

I am part of a local Floral and Wedding Community.

  • If I am booked or unavailable for a wedding, I refer to my local flower friends.

  • I share resources, props and knowledge within my local flower community.

  • I mentor and teach up and coming florists.

  • I share my workspace and coolers with local flower friends and traveling florists.

  • I belong to a local wedding education group and share my business knowledge.

I am a Founder of the Flower Fest.

In 2020 I founded the Flower Fest with a marketing genius, a wedding planner and another florist. What was a wild idea during covid, has grown into a fab spring festival that brings florist from all round the state together to create floral magic! We also raise money for St Jude’s - last year contributing over $100,000,

I salary my staff.

This is more of a business philosophy, and might not seem like a big deal - but wedding work is seasonal and for event florists in New Orleans there are four really lean months. I take my responsibility as an employer seriously and want my staff to be creative and flower focused, and having a regular paycheck and knowing you can an pay the mortgage, even in the dog days of summer is important. It is a little self serving because it creates true loyalty and has repaid me many times over, and because my husband works for me, but still, it is a good thing to do.

I am a board member of Louisiana Wholesale Florist

There are many online options for purchasing flowers, but I believe in supporting a local flower wholesale, and in this case a co-op. Working with them supports our local flower community and ensures we get the best quality flowers at the best possible price. It helps me further education and quality floral design in our local market.
